From the ES bac to the established: Thea Lavite reinvents her destiny in carpentry

The life course sometimes takes unexpected turns. This is particularly the case for Thea Lavite, a passionate carpenter whose full story is featured in the latest issue of Le Compagnonage. His atypical journey demonstrates how an accidental encounter can reveal a vocation and radically transform a professional project.

How confinement turned a future sociologist into a wood craftsman

Thea's initial trajectory seemed traced: After completing an economic and social baccalaureate at the Expérimental Géréen high school in Saint-Nazaire, she was preparing to integrate Sciences Po and pursue studies in sociology. However, the Covid-19 pandemic completely changed its plans.

Back to Albi during confinement, Thea takes part by chance in an open day organized by the Association travailleur des Compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France.Out of pure curiosity, I went to this event: the first workshop I visited was carpentry and woodworking. And I stayed there," she says in her testimony. This impromptu visit then becomes the starting point for a new career orientation.

Driven by this nascent passion, Théa engages in a complete training, successively obtaining a manufacturer CAP Menuier then a manufacturer CAP Menuier Installer. Later, she pursued with a professional patent of Menuisserie, perfectly illustrating her determination and her thirst for constant learning.

Why create a workshop dedicated to solid wood and transfer of know-how

Thea's professional evolution accelerates when she buys the old workshop of her mother's maroquine in Graulhet, city historically renowned for its leather industry. Together with his spouse, also a carpenter, they transformed this space to adapt to their profession and founded La Belle Carpenterie in 2025.

"We mainly make massive (made-to-measure furniture, identical reproduction of interior doors...), and it is this axis that I like most about our job," explains Théa. This choice of specialization demonstrates its attachment to the authenticity and nobility of the material.

At the same time as his professional activity, Théa joined theUnion compagnonnique, finding in this community valuable support to perfect its techniques. "My trade group trains me and answers my questions," She pointed out, stressing the importance of this mutual assistance in her artisanal development.

But his vision goes beyond his own success. Indeed, it feeds the ambitious project of making its workshop a place of transmission and sharing of knowledge. "In the long run, I would like to give back some of what has been given, by training learners and proposing the workshop as a welcoming place for visitors, seminars and training," She's in charge.

How can an accidental visit completely re-design a life course? What challenges await a young entrepreneur in a traditionally male sector?
